The word, Jakhu is derived from the Hindi word Yakhsa-the mythological character in Hindu mythology. Yakhsa, according to Indian mythology, is a link between human and gods, who has been the protector of the divine treasure. This temple is positioned in the thick forests of Jakhu hills. Being the highest peak around Shimla, the Jakhu hill is famous for its trekking options. The top of the mountain offers excellent views of sunrise, sunset, mountains and town. Besides, while heading for the temple, you will get zigzag ways, of narrow paths and roads which are an enjoyable regarding walk. An air of Hindu mythology reigns over the whole locale.

There is a beautiful story behind the formation of the temple. According to legends, Lord Hanuman rested on the Jakhu hills while getting back with the whole mountain containing herbs which could cure the wounded Lakshman, the younger brother of Rama, who got injured during the famous Rama - Ravana fight. Due to the weight of Hanuman and the mountain he was bearing the top of Jakhu hill got flat.
