Jama Masjid of Srinagar is a significant mosque of Srinagar and was built by Sultan Sikandar in 1400 AD. Later some time Zain-ul-Abidin, the son of Sultan Sikandar, got the mosque expanded. Jama Masjid of Srinagar owes its attractiveness to the aesthetic illustration of Indo-Saracenic architecture, 370 wooden pillars and a splendid courtyard. Another outstanding feature of the mosque which touches the heart of people stepping in here is the serenity and tranquility of this place amidst the noise and crowd of the old bazaars around it. Jama Masjid is considered a holy place for the Muslims, where thousands of Muslims come together every Friday to offer Namaaz which is their religious prayers.
Jama Masjid of Srinagar has been subject to much destruction till date. Thrice this magnanimous mosque was ruined by fire but was restored after every disaster. The last reconstruction work was carried out under the reign of Maharaja Pratap Singh. Still today this mosque stands tall like the pride of Srinagar, holding within itself rich stories from the past and calling all Muslims to pray five times a day. But you do not necessarily have to be a Muslim to appreciate the beauty of the mosque, anyone having an eye for history and culture will understand and be awed by the richness that this historical mosque reflects.
