Srinagar is also known as the city of lakes and has some of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Some of the lakes which enhance the beauty of Srinagar and make it a more alluring tourist attraction are Dal Lake in Srinagar, Nagin Lake in Srinagar and Wular Lake in Srinagar. Picturesque views, shikaras or houseboats, beautiful gardens, lakes and the wonderful historic monuments are what make Srinagar a paradise.

From Srinagar Overview you’ll come to know that Wular Lake in Srinagar is located between the towns of Bandipore and Sopore approximately 60 kilometers from the city of Srinagar. This beautiful lake spreads over an area of over 125 square kilometers and is one of the largest fresh water lakes in Asia. The one very distinguishing feature of the Wular Lake is that it changes character after every few miles of its course. Wular lake in Srinagar is a perfect example of natural beauty at its best without any artificiality. Some other attractions of the Wular Lake of Srinagar consist of some ruins, standing in the middle of the lake. These ruins are the remains of an island called Zaina Lanka, built by King Zain-ul-abidin. If the sources are to be believed then this lake is a remnant of the Satisar Lake, which used to be here in the pre-historic times. A tour of the lake is a wonderful voyage that takes you around the neighboring town of Bandipore which is quite famous for its woolen carpets for sale. Another interesting place of sightseeing in Pondicherry near Wular Lake is the Nal Sarovar Bird Sanctuary. The lake is home to a wide variety of birds and aquatic fishes.

Wular Lake in Srinagar has a significant role to play in the hydrographic system of the Kashmir Valley by acting as predominant absorption basin for the annual floodwater. Taking in consideration the biological, hydrological and socio-economic significance of the lake, it was included as a Wetland of National Importance in 1986 under the Wetlands Program of the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India and in 1990 was designated as the wetland of international importance.
