Introduction:

The Golden Temple, Amritsar, India is built in Amritsar and is very famous. Its dome is made up of complete pure gold. It is worshipped by mainly Sikhs and people come from all over the world to visit this temple. It does not restrict entry to any Hindu. It is very beautiful and peaceful. It was in the old times in the middle of a small lake in the forest. Meditators or sages used to come here to meditate from long distances to meditate in this place in peace. It has been famous since long and old times. It is also said that Buddha too spent a few years at this place. Guru Nanak the founder of the Sikh religion also visited this place long after Buddha had visited this place. The disciples started visiting the Golden Temple, Amritsar, India and kept on devoting it whole-heartedly. It became like the holy place of the Sikhs rather than the Hindus.

History:

It was not during the times of Guru Nanak that this temple was developed. Later in the times of the fourth Sikh guru Ram Dass and fifth guru Arjan, the Temple of God or The Golden Temple, Amritsar, India was built. This all was in the period between 1574 and 1606. For almost a century and a half the gurus till the tenth of the Sikhs, the Sikh religion was continuously being defended against the Muslims. This temple during these wars was destroyed a number of times but, rebuilt each time. Every time it was built more enormously and beautifully and elegantly than before. Almost after the year 1767 onwards, the Sikhs became strong in the military status and could give a tough fight to the invaders.

Details:

The temple's architecture is the combination of both Hindu and Moslem artistic styles. Even though it is almost a fusion of these two cultures, it still shows a distinct architectural style in it too. It was during the rule of Maharaja Ranjit Singh; Hari Mandir was put up with large ornaments and rich, precious stones, gold and every other possible jewellery. In the forest surrounding the temple holds a script of the Sikhs- Adi Grantha. This scripture is also fully loaded with a lot of precious jewels and stones. This scripture consists of a collection of devotional poems and prayers. This scripture has been composed by the ten Sikh gurus and also other various Moslem and Hindu saints. There exists an underground spring which continuously keeps on filling up the sacred lake.
