Location:

The Meenakshi Temple is situated in Madurai. The temple is built on the banks of the river Vaigai.
This city was an important cultural and commercial center and the capital city of the great Pandya kings.

How to reach:

Madurai is connected to the major towns and cities in Tamil Nadu by bus. Through Madras, it is connected to different parts of India. It is an important railway junction on the Southern Railway network. There are trains from Madurai to Madras that take 8 hours via Trichy and 6 hours from Rameshwaram. There are daily flights from Madras to Madurai and 4 times a week from Bangalore. Flights are also available from Tiruchirapalli.

Places of Interest:

The Meenakshi Temple Madhurai, India complex is built within a high-walled enclosure. At the center there are two sanctums for Meenakshi and Sundareshwara. There are a number of smaller shrines and huge pillared halls. The 12 gopuras are also grandiose. The soaring towers emerge from solid granite bases. They are covered with stucco figures of deities, mythical animals and monsters drawn in vivid colors. The East tower had a height of 161'3". This gopura has 1011 sudhai figures. The South Tower has a height of 170'6". This has 1511 sudhai figures. The West Tower has a height of 163'3". This tower has 1124 figures. The North Tower has a height of 160'6". The number of sudhai figures is less than other towers. Meenakshi Nayakkar Mandapan consists of 110 pillars that have a peculiar animal with a lion's body and elephant's head. Potramaraikulam is an ancient tank where devotees take a dip in the holy water. This tank is surrounded by a pillared corrider. The Oonjal Mandapan and Killikoontu are on the western side of the tank. Lord Sundareswarar, who is the consort of Goddess Meenakshi, is to the north of Kilikoontu Mandapam.

Shopping:

Madurai is particularly famous for cotton and batiks. The intriguing point is that there are rows of tailoring shops can stitch a dress from this material within a couple of hours. Inside the eastern entrance of the Meenakshi Temple Madhurai, India is a well-known market called the Prithu Mandapam market. Various items are available here. This city is a popular textile center since very ancient times. The large number of textiles and tailoring shops around the Meenakshi Temple are evidence of this fact. The famed Madurai silk and handloom sarees can be purchased from big textile showrooms like the Hajeemoosa Textiles.
