The Meenakshi Temple Madhurai, India complex is built within a high-walled enclosure. At the center there are two sanctums for Meenakshi and Sundareshwara. There are a number of smaller shrines and huge pillared halls. The 12 gopuras are also grandiose. The soaring towers emerge from solid granite bases. They are covered with stucco figures of deities, mythical animals and monsters drawn in vivid colors. The East tower had a height of 161'3". This gopura has 1011 sudhai figures.
