The rich film culture prevailing in the city of Thiruvananthapuram or Trivandrum
is truly a big source of entertainment and inspiration for the native movie buffs.
Earlier Malayalam films were produced from Chennai (Madras) which in the 70s,
shifted to Kerala. In order to promote cinema in Trivandrum, Kerala State
Film Development Corporation (KSFDC) was instituted in 1975. It was after the
establishment of Kerala State Film Development Corporation, many movie related
industries up surged in the region of Trivandrum.
During the year 1980, several movie studios in Trivandrum were inaugurated
of which worth mentioning are the Chithranjali and Merryland. The movies in
Trivandrum were soon operational and thereby multiplied wherein firms like Prasad
Film Laboratory expanded their base in the region. The region even witnessed
several animation companies setting up their respective industries in the region.
The Toonz India Ltd and Tata Elxsi Limited were soon found to set up their operation
in the region that boosted cinema in Trivandrum to a great extent. The Kinfra
Film and Video Park is situated near the Technopark area which is known to produce
several advanced film and animations.
In order to promote Cinema in Trivandrum, the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy
was established in 1998. The Kerala Chalachitra Academy in Trivandrum conducts
functions like annual International Film Festival of Kerala in the month of
November apart from hosting the annual Kerala State Awards for Film and TV.
The State Chalachitra Academy in Kerala was formed to encourage film literacy
in the region by promoting film societies, by publishing books and periodicals,
and conducting film appreciation courses, seminars and workshops.

prevalent theatres in Trivandrum. Movies in Trivandrum can be easily watched
at any one of the 16 A-Class theatres which is spread in the region, a popular
host to the regional Film Festivals.
