Jagdish temple in Udaipur

The Jagdish temple in Udaipur was built by Maharana Jagat Singh and cost him a whopping sum of 1.5 million. The magnificent temple is dedicated to Lord Jagannath and can be reached after plying an extended flight of stairs.

Right at the entrance you will find two mammoth elephants adorning the gates. The temple has a intricately crafted shikhar, a big mandap and a spacious portico. The shikhar stands at a height of 79 feet and is embellished with carved elephants, horsemen, musicians and dancers.

Jagdish temple in Udaipur has three storeys. Each of the floors has fifty pillars and is one of the best in Udaipur. Survey had shown that the temple is one of the most celebrated Vishnu temples of northern India.

The interiors of the temple are amazingly beautiful. The walls are full of intricate carvings and frescoes. The four corners of the temple have four small shrines devoted to Lord Shiva, Ganesha, Goddess Shakti and the Sun God.

In the walls of the portico there is an inscription written in Sanskrit which delineates the entire history of the reign of Maharana Jagat Singh. The outstanding figure of Garuda at the front of the main shrine is wonderful.

The temple architecture is very traditional in flavor and is a tribute to the craftsmen who worked on it. It is a part of the city palace and as a result attracts thousands of visitors everyday.

Jagdish temple in Udaipur is said to be one of the best examples of Indo Aryan architecture. Completed in the year 1651 the temple has been standing upright as the symbol of majestic pride and glory.
