Varanasi is one of the most sought-after religious places in India and also one of the popular tourist destinations. It is said that it owes its origin to ancient India, when after vanquishing Ravana, Lord Rama returned from his exile to his kingdom, the city was lighted up with candles and lamps to welcome him. During the auspicious occasion of Diwali in Varanasi, the whole city is lighted up with colorful lights. People whitewash their houses and decorate with rangoli. In the evening they light up their houses with beautiful candles, and diyas or earthen lamps adorn the interiors. Diwali in Varanasi is a cherished occasion for the children as well. The children enjoy with the amazing firecrackers. New garments and sweets are bought in abundance for the family and the near and dear ones. The whole city glitters and shimmers with lights and fireworks, and everywhere you will find only happiness.

Stupendous statues and figures of the Hindu deities are carried along the streets with great elegance and splendor. The procession is accompanied with crackers, and music and songs. Diwali in Varanasi also states that the people set afloat diyas along the river. A special aarti is performed on this day at the ghats. The ghats too are illuminated with innumerable candles. The temples are overcrowded with devotees who joyfully stand in long cues with their offerings.

To name a few other major festivals in Varanasi are Mahashivratri, Buddha Purnima, Hanuman Jayanti and Ganga Festival.
