An island of thousand temples - Bali, in every village there are several temples
and at least one small temple in each home of Balinese which reach to a total
of 10,000, making Pura Penataran Sasih in Bali one of the major places for sightseeing
in Bali.
Not far from Pura Kebo Edan is Pura Penataran Sasih, also known as the Moon
Temple which has a mythological large Bronze Gong. Pura Penataran Sasih in Bali
is a beautiful temple with many ancient stone statues of Gadjah, Siwa and other
deities; its centerpiece is the Moon of Pejeng.
A highly valued and ornate gong called The Moon of Pejeng is regarded as Indonesia's
most important Bronze-Age antique. The gong is in a shape of an hourglass and
is beautifully engraved. The antiquity is supposedly dated about 300 BC around
the time of the Bronze Age in Indonesia.
The location of Pura Penataran Sasih in Bali is easily accessible as the temple
is about 6 km away from Gianyar town, on the main road towards north. The temple
derived its name from an ancient bronze kettledrum which is now kept in the
inner chamber. The kettledrum is about 2 meters in length; and it is locally
known as the Moon of Pejeng, as one of the few relics of the Balinese Bronze
Age, it is a great archeological find. Pura Penataran Sasih in Bali served the
purpose of one the most important places of worship during the time of the great
Balinese kingdoms. Various temple festivals are held in the 9th Balinese month
at the Pura Penataran Sasih in Bali.
