History of Keong Emas Imax Theater in Jakarta
‘Keong Emas’ means Golden Snail. The roof of this theater takes the shape a golden snail. The Golden snail, better known as the Golden Apple Snail, was first spotted in Indonesia in the early 80's. Although an agricultural pest, the Golden Apple Snail in that era was also cultivated as a human food source. Soon, a new apple snail based cuisine appeared and many farmers started to grow these snails in their ponds.
The snails became very popular. The vogue led to the president and his wife, the late Madame Tien Suharto, initiating the building of a theater with an architecture resembling the shape of the Golden Apple Snail. The whole complex was painted in the same golden yellow color like the snail and called the Keong Emas Imax Theater.
