A land known for its rich diversity and a vast range of wildlife, Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, has taken great steps in preserving and promoting the same. As such a considerable number of wildlife reserves and national parks have come up in and around the capital city. The Gunung Gede National Park has gained much priority among all since its inception as early as in 1980. The National Park was initially a biosphere reserve popularly known as the Cibodas Biosphere Reserve which was established in 1830. The National Park came into existence under a declaration made by the Minister of agriculture, The Republic of Indonesia on March 6th, 1980. Features of Gunung Gede National Park in Jakarta:
- The Gunung Gede National Park has been the seat of research from all over the world for a long time now. Spread over a huge area, the park is divided in different habitat zones ranging from Sub Mountain to highland meadows. - The main aim behind the establishment of this National Park was to preserve the rich variety of plants and animals and provide the nature lovers with the valuable opportunity to observe a unique selection of wild life, forest and volcanoes for which the park is renowned. - Two volcanoes within the park area are an added attraction for the visitors. The twin peaks of Gede and Pangrango with their thick foliage and steep slopes are perfect for hiking and spotting the rare feathered friends. - The Park is the appropriate place where you can spot some of Java’s endemic birds. Birds which can be spotted are chestnut-Bellied Partridge, Sumantran Green Pigeon, Siberian and whites Thrush. The bird species counts 200 kinds and the usual ones to be spotted are Mountain thrush and Peregrine Falcon. - Other wildlife comprises of Leopard, Muncak, and Pigs which are rarely spotted. The Gibbons, Leaf Monkeys and Macaques are the commonest of ones which are easy to hear in the silence of the forest. There are around 60 leopards in the park. - The plant kingdom is also lustrously beautiful. Chestnuts, Oaks, Laurels are the pride of the lower altitudes where as the Begonias and little white flowers line the swift flowing streams. - To explore the real charm of the Indonesian wildlife, the National Park has provisions for an overnight stay. There is a fine dining area in the park as well as a gift shop to take back souvenirs. How to reach Gunung Gede National Park in Jakarta:
- The National park can be reached by road from two points- Jakarta and Bandung. The main entrance to the park is located at a distance of 120 km from both the points. - The two other points from where the Park can be accessed are from Cipanas and Pacet through Gunung Putri located just east of Cibodas and also from Sukabumi through Selabintana. - You can also avail a car and reach the park from Bogor. - However another possible entrance to the park is at Sitagunung.
