With the sea all around, it is only natural that the Gili Islands in Lombok will become swimmers and divers’ paradise. Lombok though just beside Bali on the eastern side, was not really on the preference list of the global tourists, probably because it was hidden from the public eye for decades. It is only recently that Lombok has arrived on the global tourist map with a bang, the pristine beauty and the local population with up and about in their simple way of life is definitely a welcome change from the hustle bustle of a modern city life. There are three islands just of the Lombok mainland known as the Gili Islands (gili means small in local language), Gili Trewangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air. Innumerable diving spots dot the Gili islands, one spot that has to be mentioned in this respect is the Frogfish Point on the east of Gili Air Island. Gili Air Island of the three Gili Islands is nearest to Lombok mainland. It has a sizeable population and rich in wood resources. In fact of the three islands, Gili Air has the heaviest green cover. Originally the island was inhabited only by local fishermen who made their living by deep sea fishing. You can visit the quaint villages which present ample proof of the simple life style of these rustic folk, they seem to be so untouched by the marauding modernity singeing the human population in more well known habitations. Gili Air is for relaxation and retrieval. Apart from sightseeing, this island allows you to spend time in the sea generously, the surrounding waters are relatively calmer. If you are thinking of diving deep and exploring the unknown world underneath, then straight head for Frogfish Point. It is to the eastern side of Gili Air. You can spot nth number of unseen fishes or other marine creatures. Some of the rare species are seen here with unfailing regularity but you must know to appreciate them. Left undisturbed most aqua inhabitants will just pass by leaving you enthralled. You will find a rather large coral block and some sandy areas. These sandy areas are just perfect for garden eels to creep around, see the various corals with overgrown anemones and clownfish. Ghost pipefishes, frogfishes and scorpion fishes are found here and one has to mention the huge number of shrimps. When everything has been said about Frogfish Point, some things are still left unsaid, after all the out of the world experience can hardly be explained with mere words!
