Semarang is the capital of Central Java in Indonesia and one of few cities in Java where you can still feel the traditional way of life combined with all the conveniences of a modern city. This picturesque city derives its name from the Javanese words "asem" and "arang" which literary translate to "scarce tamarind." This town has both beach and hilly areas. Simpang Lima is the famous shopping center here. It is a square with many shops and cinemas around. In the evening a lot of people are here taking a walk or window-shopping. You will get daily wares, household articles, crockery, designer clothes, branded clothing, shoes, jewellary, artifacts and many other articles. Sri Ratu Mall is the oldest mall in Semarang. The other important malls in Semarang are the Matahari Plaza, the Citraland Mall, and the Java Mall. There are many restaurants in the adjoining areas where you can refresh yourself after shopping.
