Sriwedari Park was initially opened as a resort and recreational center for the Royal Family. The idea of creation of the park was inspired by a story about a mythical park in Heaven and King Pakubuwono X was responsible for the establishment of the park. Local people generally refer to Sriwedari Park as Kebun Rojo, which means king’s garden. But then things have changed over the time and today the park is one of the popular amusement parks of the city and offers loads of facilities for children and adults. Besides this, park also boasts of small restaurants renowned for offering traditional local dishes, a museum, and many souvenir stands. There is also a children playground and Zoo at the park, which features the widest selection of animals in Central-Java
Sriwedari Park is also home to the nightly programs of Wayang Orang, the live Wayang dance dramas that performed by the top Wayang dancers and singers of the city as well as the country. The park also plays host to a month-long evening bazaar, which is held before the celebration of Idul Fitri.
