There are inscriptions carved on the stone of Plaosan which tell you that they were constructed jointly by rulers of two dynasties- the ruler of Sanjaya dynasty, Rakai Pikatan, and the ruler of Cailendra dynasty, King Samaratungga.

According to another opinion, the Plaosan Temples were built in the 9th century by King Rakai Pikatan, a Hindu, along with his wife Queen Pramodhawardhani, who had Buddhism as her religion.
