Climbing in Yogyakarta

Mount Merapi is located to the North of Yogyakarta and it is 2911 meters high. Climbing this mountain will take every bit of your courage and energy! However, owing to the danger of possible eruptions, the climbing has been restricted to only 500 meters from the peak by the authorities. The panoramic view of nature all around makes the exhausting journey all the more easy. The climbing generally starts just before dawn and when the first rays of the sun hit the mountain and the red lavas, the sight is truly blissful.
Tips to the climbers: You are advised to wear sturdy shoes, warm clothes, sufficient water and food for trekking. The higher you climb the more you will be surrounded by fog, mist and freezing cold. You must be well equipped to face them.
Package tours: There are various kinds of trekking tour packages from which you can choose the one that you find suitable. There are tours like "Merapi off the Beaten Track Tour" and also "Merappi super trekking tour". These packages would cost you something around 25000 rupiah to 80000 rupiah.
The mountain climbing routes: You have to travel to Kaliurang and then reach the Kimahrejo village that is the last village to the top. There are plenty of trekking packages available for you to choose from. However, you should always avoid the rainy season for climbing the mountain.
