Yogyakarta Overview

Indonesia - Jakarta - Lombok - Semarang - Solo - Yogyakarta - Bali
The Yogyakarta Overview is a must for every traveler as it gives an overall idea about the place that one is going to visit. It is a city in the Yogyakarta Special Region in Indonesia. It is popular primarily because of the city being a center of Javanese fine art and culture like the music, poetry, batik, ballet, the puppet shows and drama. This is also a popular place for being a center for higher education. It was also the capital city of Indonesia from 1945 to 1949 during the Indonesian War of Independence.

The city of Yogyakarta

The city has an area of about 32.5 kilometers. It sprawls in all directions but the modern part of the city lies towards the north. The city is replete with numerous shopping malls, local markets with shops spilling on to the side walks.

The "kraton" or the Sultan's palace lies right at the center of Yogyakarta. Around the palace are the densely populated regions. These places were at first the Sultan's domain and the place does bear ample evidence of the fact. The entire place is in ruins but the "water Castle"( the Tamansari) reflects its former glory. This place is no longer used by the Royalty and the gardens have been abandoned. The palace is now being used for residential purposes. Restoration of the area began in 2004 and it is fast developing into a popular tourist attraction.

Transport

The Adisucipto International Airport serves Yogyakarta.

The city is ideally located on the major railway line that runs across Surabaya and Bandung/ Jakarta. The city has got two passenger railway stations and they are the Lempuyangan and Tugu.

The city is also well connected by an extensive system of buses. Yogyakarta is one of the main destinations if you are on the way to Bali or Java. There are the andong, the becak and also the taxis. Motorbikes are also used to a great extent usually for personal purposes.
