During the Crusader occupation, troops of pious hermits started to live in the caves in imitation of Elijah the Prophet in the 12th century and within a few hundred years, they were organized into the Carmelite order. Construction of the Stella Maris Lighthouse, Church and Carmelite Monastery was started in 1836.

At the beginning, there was a monastery complex which was a hospital for Napoleon's soldiers during his unsuccessful blockade of Akko in 1799. Structured in dazzling Italian marbles, the Stella Maris Church looks outstanding. Here on the dome you will see the colorful paintings which illustrate the episodes from the Old Testament, by Brother Luigi Poggi. The statue of Virgin Mary, carved from cedar of Lebanon, is also noteworthy.
