Golan Heights is located on the border of Israel and is surrounded by the Middle Eastern states of Lebanon, Jordan and Syria. The word ‘Golan’ originated from an ancient city known as a ‘City of Refuge’ mentioned in the Bible. Eventually, Golan became the informal name of the region which has been captured by the state of Israel from Syria. The region is also known as Gaulanitis or Gaulonitis.The Heights feature two major summits. One of them is Mount Hermon and Mitzpeh Shlagim which are 2,814 and 2,224 meters above sea level respectively. The Golan Heights in Israel is divided into three major regions: 1. Northern Region comprises the area between Sa’ar and the Jilabun Valley 2. Central Region which lies between Jilabun and Daliyot Valley 3.
