Hebron, one of the oldest cities of the world rejoices in the rich mythical history. For much of the last century the ancient city witnessed gory violence and bloodshed due to the conflict between Jews and Arabs. Though the city is considered to be one among the four holy places by the Jews, the violence has led Israel government to retreat from most of the city and now it is under the administration of the Palestinian government. The very name of the city Hebron is derived from the Hebrew word 'Haver', meaning close ally or friend and it relates to Abraham, the friend of God. The city is located 23 miles north to Jerusalem. Tourists can avail bus or taxi or private car to reach Hebron. The atmosphere of the city breathes antiquity and spirituality. The Cave of Machpelah, or Tomb of the Patriarchs is one major spots to which tourists and pilgrims swarm alike. This is considered to be the most ancient Jewish site of the world. This is the grave, where the holy souls of Abraham, his wife Sarah, and Isaac, Jacob, Rebecca and Leah rest in eternal peace. Herod built an establishment around the cave 2000 years ago. The structure is quite similar to that of the one on Temple Mount. Three huge carved doors separate the entire building in three rooms, namely Ohel Avraham, Ohel Yitzhak, and Ohel Ya'akov. There is a door which opens to the courtyard. Huge cenotaphs cover the tombs which are placed underground. The whole ambiance has a kind of benumbing calmness and peace. The 5000 year old holy Oak tree stands nearby, where according to the common myth, Abraham first put up his tent. There are several other sites in Hebron which are extremely significant in terms of archaeological and religious interests. The tombs of Othniel Ben Kenaz , the first ever judge in the history of Israel and many sages and persons of reputation are buried in the prestigious Jewish cemetery of Hebron. The city of Hebron remains much frequented by pilgrims. The religious fervor that the city exudes makes it a must in the itinerary of the tourists visiting the Israel’s popular destinations.
