Celebrated on the Sunday before Easter, Palm Sunday in Jerusalem is a moveable
feast in the Christian calendar. As the first day of Holy Week, Palm Sunday
in Jerusalem commemorates Jesus' triumphal procession into Jerusalem and in
this procession the people of Jerusalem waving palm branches and clothing before
Him and announcing Him as the messianic king. To celebrate the triumphal entry
of Jesus into Jerusalem several churches circulate cut palm branches, occasionally
these cut palm branches woven into the shape of a cross and this distribution
is a part of Palm Sunday services. The tradition of Palm Sunday in Jerusalem
perhaps traced back to the 4th century.
On the very day of Palm Sunday in Jerusalem, worshippers perform the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem, which was marked by the masses, who at that time resided in Jerusalem for Passover and they expressed their joy by the waving of palm branches and singing songs of celebration. From time to time, this celebration is associated with a processional into the church. To involve the children in the worship life of the community of Faith, various churches considered children as the integral part of this service and the kids are enjoy this processions and activity as a part of worship.
Palm Sunday in Jerusalem is known as the Passion Sunday, where the residents
of Jerusalem celebrate the beginning of Holy Week and the last excruciating
journey of Jesus to the cross. For the Protestants the liturgical color for
The Season of Lent is purple, which is used till Easter Sunday whereas in Catholic
custom the colors are changed to Red for Palm Sunday. A large section of Protestants
celebrate Palm Sunday on the Sunday before Easter, but the Catholic and other
church traditions Palm Sunday is commemorated as Passion Sunday as well, which
anticipating the impending death of Jesus.
