Dominus Flevit in Jerusalem

Israel - Eilat - Haifa - Jerusalem - Tel Aviv

The place of Jerusalem which is worth visiting from the point of view of both historical and religious importance is the Mount of Olives. This is because without seeing the Dominus Flevit in Jerusalem, which is on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem, your trip of Jerusalem cannot be complete. The meaning of Dominus Flevit, a Latin word is ‘The Lord Wept’. This was literally depicted in the unique architecture of the church; it resembles a teardrop. According to the 19th chapter of the Gospel of Luke, Jesus, once while walking towards the Old City of Jerusalem, was mesmerized by the beauty of the Second Temple. When he visualized the destiny of the Second Temple, which showed its destruction he could not hold back his tears.

Dominus Flevit in Jerusalem is a relatively new church built on an ancient site. It was designed by the celebrated architect Antonio Barluzzi between 1953-1955.While the construction work was going on, archaeologists discovered many relics of the Canaanite period as well as of the Second Temple and the Byzantine Empire. A Byzantine shrine of 7th century was also discovered from the site. The floor of the shrine was incorporated in the church and therefore you will find the floor of the church to have beautiful designs of circles and pictures of various flowers, fruits and fishes.

Over the mosaic tiles of the Dominus Flevit in Jerusalem you will find a slab of Byzantine era, which was unearthed by the archaeologists. Therefore in one word you can say that the Dominus Flevit in Jerusalem is a beautiful blend of both modern and ancient architecture.
The construction of Dominus Flevit in Jerusalem is such that, when watched from the top of the mountain, it appears to be huge, but this is a façade since in reality it is actually very small. But in spite of its small stature the beauty of its architecture has made it an impressive structure. The inner lines of the domes of the Church are adorned with intrinsic mosaics, while all the four walls have paintings from Bible.
However, the best part of the Church’s architecture is the arch-shaped window situated behind the altar. Here you will find depiction of the Old City with its various buildings and the Mosque of Omar. In the bottom of the altar is the mosaic picture of a hen and a chicken with a message written below, holding Jerusalem guilty for killing its famous children sent to her by God.

So on your visit to Jerusalem, you must visit the Dominus Flevit in Jerusalem.
