The Shrine of the Book in Israel
Israel - Eilat - Haifa - Jerusalem - Tel Aviv
The Dead Sea Scrolls were discovered during the middle of the twentieth century in some eleven caves which is located in an around the Wadi Qumran.
Other than the Dead Sea Scrolls which are a major attraction here the Shrine of the book also contains some rare manuscripts also.
The Shrine of the Book has a unique and interesting architecture and it has a dome like structure two thirds of which is inside the ground and the reflection is seen in the water body which surrounds the structure of the Shrine of the book.
The architecture of the place is quite mesmerizing with a striking contrast created with a white dome against a black basalt wall. This has had a profound effect of the landscape of Israel.
The Shrine of the Book was built in 1965 for the preservation and exhibition of the Dead Sea Scrolls but unfortunately due to the fragile nature of the items, it is not displayed for an extended period of time.
The Dead Sea scrolls are put on display for not more than three to six months on a stretch after which they are carefully removed from the display place and it is placed carefully in a store room and it is hidden from public glaze.
However the value of the museum doesn’t go down once these scrolls are removed as the scrolls which are removed are replaced by authentic scroll fragments.
The Shrine of the Book is an important part of the Israel museum and it sees quite a large number of visitors every year and it has become one of the major tourists attractions of Israel.
