Neve Tzedek in Tel Aviv
Israel - Eilat - Haifa - Jerusalem - Tel Aviv
The early years of twentieth century saw Neve Tzedek gain in reputation as a neighborhood conducive to artistic growth. Such a reputation was aided by artists like Shmuel Yosef Agnon and Nahum Gutman who chose the neighborhood as their home.
In the 1960s, the derelict and worn out look of Neve Tzedek and the stark contrast between the neighborhood and rest of Tel Aviv caused not a little unease to the authorities, who at one point of time had settled on the decision to bring down the neighborhood.. Realizing the value of the old buildings in Neve Tzedek, preserving them was preferred over destroying them. Soon the plans to demolish the Neve Tzedek were abandoned and renovation programs were set into motion. In accordance with the preservation plans the house of Nahum Gutman Nahum Gutmanwas was made into a museum, while Suzanne Dalal’s house was named Dance and Theater Center.
The present Neve Tzedek owes much to the process of gentrification after almost being signed off by everyone as a defunct neighborhood. Neve Tzedek now has charming buildings encircled by well maintained gardens.
