There is a controversy regarding the origin of golf but according to popular
belief, golf was originated in Netherlands though golf was played for more than
five centuries in England and it was very popular in Scotland for centuries.
In 1672, golf was played for the first time in its present trend in Scotland's
Links, the world's oldest golf course. Originally golf was predominantly restricted
as a favorite past time among the upper strata of the society but gradually
it evolved as a popular sport among all cross sections of the society.
Golf is a "/wiki/Sport"sport in which individual players or teams
hit a "/wiki/Golf_ball"ball into a hole using various clubs. The area
of land in which golf is played is known as the golf course. A hole means both
the hole in the ground into which the ball is played (also known as the cup),
as well as the total distance from the tee (a pre-determined area from where
a ball is first hit) to the green (the low cut area surrounding the actual hole
in the ground). Usually golf courses have eighteen holes.
Golf courses often provide additional facilities where a practice range or driving
range is provides for practising. These driving ranges are not part of the actual
course itself and usually accompanies practice greens, bunkers, and driving
areas to practice long shots. For the convenience of the golfers markers showing
distances are generally included on a practice range. At times practice course
or a golf school is often associated with a course.
