Prince Takamatsu Cup Nishinippon Round Kyushu Ekiden Fukuoka

The grand celebration of The Prince Takamatsu Cup Nishinippon Round-Kyushu Ekiden traces its origin in Japan since 1951. It’s known to be among one of the annual sports in Japan as it provides a huge arena and opportunity for the contestants from the prefectures on the island of Kyushu, Yamaguchi and Okinawa Prefectures to gather and proceed with the event to win the Prince Takamatsu Cup. Prince Takamatsu Cup event actually commences at Nagasaki, proceeding to the cities of Sasebo, Saga, Kumamoto, Minamata, Kagoshima, Miyazaki, Nobeoka, Oita, Kitakyushu, and it finally comes to an end at Fukuoka. This is also known to be the longest relay race in the world with a 1064-km course, which consists of 72 segments.

Prince Takamatsu relay race originated in paying respect and homage to his Imperial Highness Prince Takamatsu of Japan. His life span continued from 1905 January 3rd to 1987 February 3rd. he was the third son of Emperor Taisho and was also the younger brother of Emperor Showa. Prince Takamatsu from mid-1920s till the end of World War II pursued a career in the Japanese Imperial Navy and was gradually elevated to the rank of captain. After the war he became patron of various organizations in the realms of international cultural exchange, arts, sports, and medicine. People till date remember him for his philanthropic activities as a member of the Japanese imperial family.
