The Japan Rail Pass is a tourist's best friend in Japan and is the most convenient way of going around in Japan by rail. It is offered by the six companies constituting the Japan Railways Group. It is the most economical way of visiting different places of tourist attraction around Japan and can be obtained by temporary tourists and Japanese national residing in a foreign country. Features: - Two types of Rail Pass are available Green and Ordinary. The validity for each pass is available for a minimum of 7 days and maximum for 21 days. - The Japan Rail Pass can be used for all urban trains as well as the Shinkansen or bullet trains. It can also be used while availing JR bus services and Miyajima ferry. The JR Hakata-Pusan ferry is not covered under the pass. Free seat reservations can also be made by the pass holders. The Rail pass however is non applicable to Nozomi trains on the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkanshen lines. - Only the JR authorized sales office and agents are officially eligible to issue Japan Rail Pass. However it should be noted that a Japan Rail Pass is not available inside Japan. It is advisable to get the rail pass before visiting the country. - After arrival, you have to turn in the Exchange Offer at a JR station which has an authorized office. Your passport will be required as a proof before issuing the Rail Pass. The Rail passes are available from Nippon Travel Agency, JTB Corporation, Top tour Corporation. - Kushiro, Obihiro, Akita, Sendai, Fukushima, Shinjuku, Hakata, Nagasaki, Takamatsu, Miyazaki, Tokushima are some of the Travel Service centers. New- Chitose airport, Okayama, Osaka, Hiroshima, Kansai airport are the ticket offices. All these are authorized centers with rail pass exchange offices. Useful Tips while using Japan Rail - Station names are displayed in big letters in both Japanese and roman letters at all the JR stations for the passenger's convenience. - Public telephones are available in some of the bullet and ordinary trains which can be used with the help of a Telephone card available at the station kiosks or on board the train itself. - A helpful information line is available which informs you about train timings, reservation counters, offices and other essential details.
