The Hiroshima International Animation Festival is a major platform for screening animation films as a part of a global relation building effort. The festival is a biannual event featuring the best of national and international ventures in animation.

The Hiroshima International Animation Festival first began its journey in 1985 as Association Internationale du Film d'Animation (ASIFA) sought to use the festival as an instrument of encouraging a global cultural interaction and unity. ASIFA has been hosting film festivals in Europe and North America earlier. Later in the coming years, Hiroshima became their next potential destination for the animation festival. Incidentally, the year when the animation festival in Hiroshima started, marked the fortieth year after the nuclear explosion, and the festival naturally came to stand as a symbol of unity.

The festival is a complete event with workshops, relevant seminars, competitions, exhibitions and special screenings to create an impression of the most recent trends in animation. Works of both commercial and independent makers are screened here. Along with them the new makers also receive a considerable boost as their works are exposed to viewers in the international market. Film companies flock to the city to get a glimpse of all the new attempts in the field of animation. The festival is a systematic presentation as the films are categorized into various subdivisions to facilitate a better understanding.
