A must visit tourist spot in Hiroshima, Cenotaph for the A-Bomb victims is one of the several monuments that have been constructed to pay a tribute to the huge number of people who had lost their lives in the atom bomb attack on the city. The monument houses a stone chest that contains a register of people who have died of the fallouts of the atom bomb. The register according to some updated figures has more than two lakh names, grim reminder to the people who visit the place about the magnitude of destruction that was levied on this city of Japan.

The main aim of constructing this monument is to rebuild and place the city of Hiroshima as a city of peace and inspire the generations to come. The monument was designed by Kenzo Tange who was associated with the University of Tokyo in various teaching capacities.

It is made to resemble an old arch shaped house as it is supposed to provide refuge to the wandering souls of the people who have lost their lives in the bomb attacks. An inscription lies on the monument wishes for the peace of the souls that were killed and it commits to not repeating such mistakes in the near future.
