General Restaurants in Japan serve a variety of dishes than specialized restaurants and can be found all over Japan. These general restaurants offer various types of cuisine that are enjoyed by locals and tourists alike.

Some of the types of restaurants that can be termed as general restaurants in Japan are Izakaya, Family Restaurant and Shokudo and Teishuko-ya. Izakaya is a type of general restaurant which act as drinking and offer a variety of small dishes. Some of the small dishes available at Izakaya are robata or grilled food, a variety of salads and finger. These types of restaurants are perhaps the most popular among the people of Japan. Izakaya restaurants offer an informal type of setting and the people sitting in one table usually shares all the dishes rather than ordering and eating them individually.

Kaiseki Ryori is a type of "Japanese haute cuisine" and has a refined cooking style which is related to the tea ceremony and emphasizes on simplicity and elegance. This type of cuisine is available at special kaiseki ryori restaurants or at ryotei which are expensive and exclusive Japanese restaurants and used for business banquets and similar events.

Moveable food stalls can also be found along busy streets and are known as Yatai in Japan. Some stalls have seating facilities inside a tent. Dishes served at the stalls are oden and ramen. Food stands that are temporarily set up are known as Rotensho during festivals and other large scale events. Popular dishes sold at Rotensho are Okonomiyaki, takoyaki and yakisoba.
