Kobe New Transit is responsible for operating two light rails or the automated guide way transit systems in Kobe. They are the Portliner Monorail, Kobe and Rokko Liner automated guide way transit systems. The Portliner Monorail was in fact the world's first urban transport AGT, when it opened on February 5, 1981. The PortLiner Monorail initially linked Sannomiya Station, Kobe's main transit hub, to the man-made Port Island. It covered a distance of 6.4 Kilometers with nine stations falling on its way. This initial line was however extended by 4.3 Kilometers by February 2, 2006, till the new Kobe Airport , built on an artificial island near Port Island. This is an easy and enjoyable mode of transport for the visitors who prefer getting to Kobe by air . The Rokko Liner, the other light rail run by Kobe New Transit , started operating from February 21, 1990. This system connects Rokko Island, another artificial island, to JR Sumiyoshi Station. These two light rails have given a new dimension to Kobe transport . Besides the feeling of gliding through the air leaving the hustle and bustle of the ground below has a charm of its own. Kobe New Transit has a common fare chart for both the light rails. The basic fare is 200 Yens for covering a distance of 2 Kilometers, while it goes up to 240 Yens to cover a distance of 3 to 5 Kilometers. 280 yens is charged for 6 to 8 Kilometers and to travel 9 Kilometers the fare is 320 Yens.
