Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park

Japan - Fukuoka - Kobe - Nagoya - Tokyo - Osaka - Hiroshima - Kyoto - Yokohama

Located east of the Kobe Maritime Museum, the Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park is one of the chief attractions of the city. It's a location, which has the remnants of the disastrous Great Hanshin- Awaji Earthquake. This area of the Meriken Pier is conserved in its smashed up condition. The intention behind preservation of such a calamitous place is to convey to the world the massacre caused by the earthquake and the subsequent rebuilding of the city.

The Kobe Port Earthquake Memorial Park relates the catastrophe of the debacle. While visiting the park it is necessary to have some knowledge about the earthquake that had struck Kobe in the year 1995. The earthquake measured 7.2 on the richter scale and lasted for 20 seconds in the southern part of Hyogo Prefecture. The epicenter of this earthquake was twenty kilometers away from the city of Kobe, on the northern tip of Awaji Island. This major disaster occurred because the Kobe is positioned on the subduction zone of the Eurasian and Tectonic plates.

This was perhaps the worst earthquake of Japan since 1923 and the park is maintained to make the visitors understand how the city of Kobe has fought towards in evolving itself. You are likely to be fascinated by the exhibits present in the Earthquake Memorial park, not because of their beauty or magnificence but for the reality hidden in every bit of them.
