Kyoto is a city that boasts of a rich historical and cultural heritage and one of the best ways to explore the cultural legacy of the city, is by visiting its museums. Costume Museum, Kyoto is one of the premium museums of the city. It first opened its door to people in the year 1974 and from that time onwards the museum has enthralled visitors with its life-size dolls draped in diverse and eye soothing garments along with other accessories. The museum in the year 1998 opened a new addition to the museum in the form of the Spring Palace of the Rokujyo-in.

A visit to the Costume Museum will enable you to see the costumes and have an idea about the lifestyle of the Heian Period. The juni-hitoe or the ceremonial role of the court ladies and the furniture of the era is reproduced accurately in the museum. The ambience of the museum is designed in such a way so that it enhances the visitor’s understanding of the nobility of the Heian Period. The Tale of Genji forms a major part of the museum and you can enjoy the romantic episodes of the novel in the museum. Hikaru Genji and Murasaki-no-ue’s exclusive world are presented in three dimensions, which will allow you to be a silent spectator of the lives of the Heian nobility. This museum is a treat for anybody who likes the Tale of Genji.

One of the highlights of the museum is the recreation of the Lady Aoi's Rokujo palace, which is a significant place in Murasaki Shikibu's novel. The palace in the novel boasts of separate gardens, all of which are dedicated to the four seasons. This palace is represented in the museum as a quarter-sized replica, which was designed by Dr. Kozo Ike, a Chubu University professor in the Department of Technology.

The Costume Museum is located in Shimogyo-ku and can be easily accessed by the daily bus service form the city of Kyoto. It is open all days of the week except on Sundays, public holidays and obon holidays. The entry fee of the museum is varied; it is 400 yen for adults, 300 yen for Elementary and Junior High school students and 300 yen for Senior High school and University Students.
