Garden of Fine Art, Kyoto is an open air Fine Arts Museum that was conceived as a contemporary, volumetric version of a stroll garden. It is one of the popular tourist attractions in Kyoto.

The Garden of Fine Art in Kyoto is situated below the ground level so that the view from the adjacent Botanical Gardens towards the Higashiyama Mountains can be kept intact. The museum has displays works of famous masterpieces that have been reproduced on ceramic plates with permanent weatherproof properties. The garden has been built on an open scheme where there are large concrete beams on massive pillars that overlap bridges and ramps. You will also notice walls of cascading water and pools with paintings floating on the water surface which is a feature of this garden. The circulation is intersected by massive concrete malls that allow views from different angles and also add depth and variety to the exhibition spaces. The glass railing is green in colour which is in contrast to the concrete and stone surfaces that interact with the water surface that reflects different materials.

Some of the major attractions at the Garden of Fine Art, Kyoto is “The Last Judgement" by Michelangelo Buonarroti which is displayed between two artificial waterfalls. It is approximately the same size as the original and consist of 100 plates joined together to form the picture. Other attractions are the “Road with Cypresses and Star" by Van Gogh and "On the Terrace" by Renoir both of which are four times larger than the original versions. "La Grande Jatte" by Seurat is approximately the same size as the original version.

The entire process of ceramic art is made by first creating the plate from a positive film of a photo of the original painting. The plate is then transcribed on a ceramic board which then goes on a calcination process that accentuates bright colours. Many plates are then put together to form the huge picture which is then displayed at the museum.

Entry charges are 100 Yen for adults and 50 Yen for elementary and junior high school students. There is no parking lot. The garden offers independent tour facilities for wheel chair users. The language followed inside the museum is mainly Japan but there are English signs installed and English brochures that are available.
