The Land of the Rising sun, Japan is an archipelago of more than 3,000 islands. The Kyoto Prefecture is almost in the center of the island of Honshu in Japan. It has an area of 4612.71 km², which accounts for about 1.2% of the area of Japan. Kyoto is 31st largest prefecture of Japan. In the north, Kyoto is surrounded by the Sea of Japan and Fukui Prefecture. Its south faces Osaka and Nara Prefectures. To its east, lie the Mie and Shiga Prefectures and on the western side, it faces Hyogo Prefecture. The Tanba Mountains run through the middle of the Kyoto Prefecture. The Kyoto City was Japan's capital and the emperor's abode from 794 to1868.
