The Imperial Palace Park offers free access to the general public, whereas to enter the Imperial Palace building, you need previous reservation. The park opens 24- hours a day and is ideal for picnics, for jogging, walking and to relax amidst the fresh air and greenery all around. The central location of the park also adds to its attraction.
The Imperial Palace was burnt down several times and was reconstructed. The last time it was reconstructed in the year 1855. The Palace complex is enclosed by long wall and many gates. It can be visited specially on guided tours held by the Imperial Household Agency. To join such as tour, you need to apply for permission in advance with your passport at the agency’s office in the Kyoto Imperial Park. At present, two English tours are held in a day on weekdays. The palace remains close on Sundays and on National Holidays.
