Brief History The picturesque Shosei-en Garden in Kyoto is owned by the Higashi Hongan-ji temple. In the 17th century, Ishikawa Jozan and Kobori Enshu founded this garden. In 1641, the land was donated to Higashi Hongan-ji temple’s 13th Head Priest Sennyo by Tokugawa Iemitsu, the third Shogun of the Edo Period. In 1653, the priest expressed his desire to Ishikawa Jozan for a garden within the site. Unfortunately during the Edo Period, the buildings were gutted by two fires. But restroration work followed in the early parts of Meiji Period (1868-1912). The Shosei-en Garden is also known as Kikoku-tei, as the Higashi-honganji Temple is surrounded by trifoliate orange hedges. In Japanese, this orange is referred to as `kikoku’. The scenery of the beautiful Higashiyama Mountains adds up to the wonderful environment of the garden. You will find various species of flowers, herbs and plants. The garden becomes all the more beautiful with seasonal trees and plants, like the plum trees, cherry trees, wisteria and maples are in full bloom.
