Kyoto is Japan’s seventh largest city with a population of about 1.5 million people. From 794 A.D. to1868 A.D., Kyoto was the Japanese capital. Though the city lost its status to Tokyo in 1868, the city nonetheless has not lost its importance on the tourist map of Japan. Every year thousands of tourists come to visit the numerous sightseeing places located in and around this city. The best tourist season however starts from the late December and continues till the first week of January. Foreigners and Japanese alike descend on this city in huge numbers to be a part of the New Year festivities. Spring again sees tourist boom due to the famous and unique cherry blossoming festival. There are many places to explore in this beautiful Japanese city. Kyoto is known for its famous parks and gardens as well as for architecturally majestic temples. The favorite tourist hotspots are the following: Byodoin garden, Imperial park, Maruyama Park, Ryugen-in temple Zen garden, The Philosopher’s Park etc. Besides these places of interest, Kyoto is also a shopper’s paradise. Considered as the most traditional Japanese city, Kyoto is home to some of the finest Japanese arts and crafts. Kyoto ceramics center is one such shop where you can buy traditional Japanese pottery at a very reasonable price.

Kyoto Ceramics Center is actually a two-story shop. This shop displays the potteries made by the Kyoto potters. The potteries are all local made and an excellent example of the local talent. This shop displays over 10,000 items. The prices are quite reasonable and the tourists can purchase an array of products like sake cups, vases, bowls, plates, chopsticks and many more items.

The Kyoto Ceramic Center is located on Gojo-zaka station enroute to Kiyomizu temple. The shop is easily accessible from any part of the city. Bus numbers 80, 100, 202, 206 and 207 will take you to Gojo-zaka. A mere 2 minutes walk from there would take you to the shop.

The entrance door to the shop is only about 80 cm wide. The shop remains open from 9:30 in the morning till 5 in the evening. However if you are planning to visit Kyoto on the eve of New Year, you will not get the shop open. The Kyoto Ceramic center remains closed from December 30 to January 1.
