Ashoka Restaurant the centrally-located up market, atmospheric and long established restaurant comes complete with chefs from the sub-continent and waiters in cummerbunds and tuxedos. It is one of Kyoto's most popular Indian restaurants, in business about 20 years. The decor of the long-established Indian-food pioneer is traditional Indian restaurant style#heavy wallpaper and elaborate fitting#but without the kitsch. It has a smartly decorated dining room Ashoka serves spicy tandoori chicken and filling thali set meals along with Indian beers or delicious lassi.
The restaurant serves vegetarian and meat curries prepared by Indian chefs, including mutton, chicken, fish, vegetable, and shrimp selections, as well as tandoori. I started my meal here with mulligatawny Madrasi, a South Indian soup, and followed it with Indian bread stuffed with minced meat along with mutton sagwala (mutton and spinach). Courses are not cheap, although a la carte choices can be more economical.
