The Higashiyama Koen spreads across a wide area comprising of a zoo and a botanical garden. The zoo is a spacious and well-structured locale, and ranks as the largest zoo in the entire continent. It boasts of a huge collection of animals that include more than 125 species of mammals, numerous varieties of reptiles, and a fascinating collection of birds. A number of nocturnal animals are also housed here. The most interesting part of the collection is probably the family of Koalas that have been transported from Australia. Another key attraction of the zoo is the medaka tropical fish that had been a part of a space expedition. With its spacious place and lush vegetation, the zoo provides a comfortable home to the animals that have been transported from their natural habitat.
A botanical garden has grown next to the Higashiyama zoo and stands as the greenest patch in the city. The vast stretch is home to greenery that ranges from towering trees to exquisite orchids. A large stretch of flowerbed brings about colorful array of seasonal blossoms. The garden houses a green house and an Insect Hall as well. A well-tended Japanese style garden adds to the beauty of the place.
Higashiyama Zoo & Botanical Garden includes in its precincts, a majestic statue of Kannon, or the Buddhist Goddess of Mercy. Some old samurai quarters lining up in the garden add an old world charm to the place. A restaurant and amusement park are housed here to make Higashiyama a complete entertainment zone. There is also a watchtower that offers an excellent view of the city below.
