Positioned at the edge of the Osaka Bay, it developed as the milestone of the Japanese construction. The diameter of the dome is 70 meters. This steel dome is the center of attraction for the tourists. The internal beam and its sub-structure constituted of three annular floors. The beams are 900mm deep which provides the dome structure strength. The semi-circular entrance buildings constitutes of the entrance hall, offices at the ground level, storage for the animals and plant rooms.

The dome was lifted by the crane which was constructed 33 km away from the Osaka Bay. The dome's complicated structure was planned to be seismic proof, wave proof and wind proof. The dome was also designed to provide air-conditioning. The design was rewarded with the “Structural Special Award” from the Institution of Structural Engineers, of United Kingdom.
