Ikutama Shrine

Japan - Fukuoka - Kobe - Nagoya - Tokyo - Osaka - Hiroshima - Kyoto - Yokohama

The country that is famed for its jet speed and technology is also the seat of ancient religions like Buddhism and its different forms as it has evolved down the ages. Osaka is especially the place the average traveler seeks as a retreat from the day-to-day chores of mundane living and anxieties that fetter our weary heart. The indigenous system of faith that is Shintoism shows the atheist the way as the gods would have it, and is as old as the country herself. Welcome to AsiaRooms.com for information regarding the Ikutama Shrine, Osaka.

The shrine was established in the neighborhood of the Osaka Castle by Emperor Jimmu. In the year 1583, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who was born a peasant who arose to the rank of an able ruler, decided to construct a citadel, the Osaka Castle at Ishiyamazaki, and shifted the base of the Ikutama Shrine to the location where it presently stands. The site is replete with the architecture especially that of the worship hall that is ornate with designs of the Momoyama Style. The ‘Honden' or the main shrine is still the epitome of grandeur and the atmosphere of excellence.

The place, located in 13-9 Ikutama-cho in Tennoji-ku, is categorized as a Shinto shrine, which is a great tourist getaway in the summer and autumn months. It remains open for tourists between nine in the morning and five in the evening, all through the week, but this depends on the time of the year. You can access the holy place by a five minutes walk from the Tanimachi 9-chome Station on the Subway Tanimachi Line, or the Uehommachi Station on the Kintetsu line which is a 10 minutes westward walk down the location. The place is also reachable from the Osaka Station.

The establishment whose foundations were laid during the early days of the Japanese Empire observes events during various times of the year beginning in August and lasting up to the month of September. These include the Osaka Takigi-noh, the Ikutama Nomi no Ichi or the flea market, and the Hikohachi Festival. The temple gods like Ikoshima no Kami, Tarushima no Kami and Omononushi no Kami are paid regular homage by the devotees in order to ensure commercial prosperity, happy family life and conjugal bliss.

Some of the shrines located in the vicinity include the Joruri Shrine, Fuigo Shrine and the Holy Tree of Mi-san.
