Kabuki is a traditional Japanese art form which originated in Japan in 17 th century. Interestingly, this art form which was conceived when O-Kuni, a maid at the Izumo Taisha Shrine in Kyoto gathered a group of performers to raise money for the repair of the shrine, is today associated with the cultural heritage of Japan. History of Kabuki Theatre

Though both male and female performers, earlier performed in Kabuki plays, performances of women were banned were during the Tokugawa period. And male actors took upon roles of women. As the nouveau riche class came to prominence in the Edo period, K abuki art imbibed a stylized form.

In k abuki plays dealing with historical events, love and moral conflicts, performers wear elaborate dresses including masks. Traditional Japanese music with shamisen , a three-stringed lute-like instrument, Japanese flutes and drums are played.
