A perfect heaven for winter sports is Japan. Being the first Asian country to host the Winter Olympics in 1972 and later on the host country for the First and Second Winter Asian Games and lastly the 1998 Winter Olympics, Japan has gained a place of immense importance in the world of winter sports.

The popularity however is justified. Japan is the land of mighty mountains and snow capped peaks. The most favorable ones for the sport are located in the Japan Alps divided in three sectors and running down the central part of Honshu. To couple it up the Siberian air mass provides the perfect climatic conditions for the skiing slopes to develop.

The most popular sport in Japan, Skiing slopes are present in Honshu and Hokkaido. The prime skiing areas are located in the centre of the island encircling the city of Sapporo. The mountain peaks are covered with sheets of fine snow, glistening in the morning sun and inviting you to unravel your adventurous spirit. The drops may look dangerous but the challenge is worth taking. The slopes are the favorite spots for holding Downhill, Super G, Cross Country competitions. Lifts are available to transport skiers to the top of the slope.

It is advisable to wear colorful ski gear and ski with an experienced person if the sport is new.

Due to the popularity of the sport and huge crowd, a lot of ski resorts with all the facilities have developed around the skiing areas. The Chubu Region and Hokkaido houses the famous Ski resorts. However staying at a Minshuku will be more pocket friendly.

Popular Ski Areas and Resorts in Japan

- Niseko- Consists of some good snow stretch for skiing rising before the Mount Niseko Annupuris slopes. It has a sap town with comfortable lodgings.

- Shiga Kohgen- It is considered the king of Japanese skiing. The terrain is challenging and offers variety to the expert skier. Located amidst a national park the scenic beauty is awesome and the 22 resorts promise you a comfortable stay.

- Nozawa Onsen- a huge ski area nestled in the warmth of a small village. The place known as the birthplace of skiing in Japan has lodges with a homely atmosphere.
