The entire market has two different sections, which include the 'inner market 'known as 'jonai shijo' and the 'outer market' known as 'jogai shijo'. The inner market is the licensed wholesale market. The auctions and the processing of the fish takes place in this segment of the market. One can find a large number of small stalls over here from where the licensed wholesalers carry out their operations. One can find large number of wholesale and retail shops in the outer market. One can buy seafood, groceries, japans kitchen tools and other related products from the stalls in this part of the market. Visitors can also check out the sushi restaurants over here. There are numerous shops over here, which also sell restaurant supplies.
The market is open on all days. On weekdays the market opens in the morning, while on Sundays and holidays it opens at 3:00 .m. The products arrive over here by ship, trucks and planes from all across the world. The auctions houses start their operation from 5:00 a.m. The wholesalers and buyers first inspect the fishes and then the auction starts. Visitors are not allowed to see the auction, unless they obtain a special permit for the same. Visitors are not allowed to carry large bags over here, as it tends to obstruct the operations over here. The best time to visit this place is during the morning hours, before 9:00 a.m.
One can get to Tsukiji Fish Market in Tokyo by taking a train to Tsukijishijo Station on the Oedo line subway. You can also come over here by taking a train on the Hibiya Subway line to the Tsukiji Station.
