It's time to grow up! Its time to stand tall among the rest! Its time to feel honored in Tokyo. Its show time folks for those who have turned 20 in Tokyo. Its Seijin-no-hi time. Time be counted among the average.

The 15th day of the month of January is celebrated as a national holiday in Japan. The day is marked by honoring those youth of the country who reaches the age of 20 in the current year. 20 is the age which decides that you have turned a major on the Japan. The age which automatically qualifies you to being in the elite club of having the rights to adhere to the adult laws in the country, giving the right to vote in elections and the right to drink.

The event is celebrated all across Japan with the new adults being felicitated by the local government. The ceremony is commonly known as Seijin Shiki (adult ceremony). The youths of different localities are invited by the local administrations and are handed over few gifts along with the prestige of being a Japanese adult. Thus making them more responsible for the country. The ceremonies are presided by the head of the local administration.

This day is special for the women in Japan who turns 20. The Japanese women don the beautiful traditional Furisode Kimonos, a traditional Japanese dress worn on special occasions. The Kimonos worn on this occasion has special characteristic lengths which signifies the status of the lady in the society as a minor or a matured and married woman. Some of the women add a Hakama (baggy pantaloons) with the outfit. It is ironical that most of the young women cannot wear a Kimono of their own as they seek the help of a kimono kitsuke, where they are helped out to come out in the flying colors of their respective Kimonos.

Men usually dress easy at the Seijin-no-hi ceremony. Most of them come out in the usual business suits. Though sometimes some men can be seen wearing deep colored Kimonos as well.

After the ceremony it's the usual party time for the 'new adults' of Japan. The young lots gather around to celebrate and sip in their first 'official' drink. The sight of the young women limping out in their unusual slippers called the 'zori' in the weathering afternoon is exciting. As the evening approaches the mood turns to the party zones where the young ones can be spotted partying hard.
