The Japanese love fireworks and the majority of their events throughout summer are based on the display of fireworks in different places all over the country. Known as "Hanabi Taiki", the displays of this festival take place all over Japan, usually on Saturday evenings, from late July to mid-August. The Tokyo wan dai Hanabi-sai or the Tokyo Bay Big Fireworks Festival is held on the second Saturday of August each year, where the two foremost fireworks companies of Japan, namely Hosoya and Marutamaya compete in displaying the most spectacular firework displays for the onlookers.

The Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival has become one of the largest and best known fireworks displays in Tokyo, along with the Sumida River Fireworks Festival. At the festival, as many as 12,000 fireworks are launched, including giant "size 5" balls that are not used at any other fireworks events in Tokyo. Japanese fireworks are definitely elaborate and magnificent, and there are many varieties of colored bursts that thrill onlookers. Many new types of colorful bursts and rockets light up the sky, with an advance in time bringing about new manufacturing techniques that have tremendously improved the power and height of the fireworks.

The Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival is held at the Chuo City Harumi Ground and its vicinity. The Harumi main festival site is restricted to only those who have admission tickets, but the displays can also be viewed from other festivals sites nearby. Though visitors are welcome, the sites close off admission as soon as they reach their capacities for the day.

Getting to the Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival is quite simple, and there are a number of routes one may take to reach the place. The access routes to the venue, that is, Chuo City Harumi Ground, Chuou-ku, Tokyo-to, are -

1.15-minute walk from Kachidoki Sta. on the Toei subway Oedo Line
2. 20-minute walk from Toyosu Sta. or Tsukishima Sta. on the Tokyo Metro Yurakucho Line
3. 25-minute walk from Tsukiji Sta. or Higashi-ginza Sta. on the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line
4. 25-minute walk from Higashi-ginza Sta. on the Toei subway Asakusa Line
5. 30-minute walk from Etchujima Sta. on the JR Keiyo Line

Almost every weekend during the summer, especially in mid-August, all of Tokyo and Japan are witness to large fireworks or hanabi displays. And, the Tokyo Bay Grand Fireworks Festival is one of the foremost fireworks festival held in Tokyo.
