Tobacco and Salt Museum

The Tobacco and Salt Museum was set up and maintained by Japan Tobacco, one of the largest tobacco companies of the country. This speciality museum houses numerous article related to tobacco and salt. It traces the history of Tobacco and salt not only in the country, but also of the whole, world. One can find numerous paintings, documents and other artifacts, which talks about the tobacco culture in Japan as well as in the world. The numerous displays provide one with all sorts of information regarding the Japanese methods of smoking, influence of tobacco upon Japanese art and other related matter.
The museum is a four- storied building. The first floor has a reception area, a lounge area and a museum shop. One can buy a large number of cards, souvenirs and other products from this shop. The first floor also has an auditorium equipped with audio-visual equipments. This auditorium is used for a large number of events and functions. The museum has a mezzanine floor also. This floor houses the Route of Tobacco section. This section deals with history of Tobacco and salt and their entry into Japan. One can also get to know about the uses of tobacco in ancient times in this country. The second floor of the museum houses the Japanese tobacco section. This section provides with a complete insight into the uses of tobacco in Japan in early times. You can also see the samples of Japanese tobacco as well as foreign tobacco displayed over here and see the difference between the two.
If you go up to the worlds, you will come to the Japanese salt and Foreign salt section. Here you can see a huge block of salt displayed in the rooms. Other displays include samples of sun-baked salt, rock-salt, lake salt and other varieties of salt. Besides these, one can also check out the numerous paintings displayed over here. Some of the most popular ones include Meisho Bijin juniso, Ryogoku Hane asobi, Mono-uri Mitate and others. You can also check out the fifty-three stages of the Tokaido series made by the famous artist Hiroshige. Apart from these, the visitors can also check out the ancient cigarette packets, smoking pipes and paraphernalia from all across the world.
The museum is open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. One has to pay an entry fees to enter the museum. Te museum is open on all days except on Mondays. Pets are not allowed inside the museum premises and one is also not supposed to carry any food items inside. The museum has wheelchair facility for the disabled visitors. You can come to this museum by taking a train to the Shibuya Station by the JR Yamanote Line to the JR Saikyo line and then walk from there till you reach this museum.
