The Tokyo Fuji Art Museum was established in the year 1983. It was founded by a gentleman named Daisaku Ikeda, who was the president of Soka Gakkia International. The museum conducts a large number of exchange exhibitions, which is in tune with its motto of building cultural bridges across the world. The museum is particularly famous for its cultural exchange programs. Through these programs and exhibitions, it tries to bring the works of art of other countries to Japan and vice versa.
The museum has total of 30000 artifacts displayed in its numerous halls. The museum collection consists of paintings, prints, photography, sculpture, ceramics and lacquer ware as well as armor, swords and medallions. The biggest attractions of this museum are the Western Oil Paintings and the fantastic photograph collection. The permanent collection of the museum has been designated as important cultural assets of the country. Nearly 4000 artworks form part of the permanent collection of this art museum. One of the most famous displays of the museum is the gold inlaid screen paintings dating back to the Edo period.
The Tokyo Fuji Art Museum conducts exhibitions not only within the country but also in other countries. In fact, the museum has conducted exhibitions in nearly 26 cities in 17 countries. One of the biggest overseas exhibitions organized by this museum was the "Eternal Treasures of Japan" held in the city of Paris. Other major overseas exhibition held over in the past includes "Masterpieces of Western Painting from Renaissance to 20th Century", "Art Exhibition of Man Ray" and others. Besides these, the museum also organizes a number of concerts and cultural programs for art lovers and the people in general.
The museum is open form 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is closed on Mondays. One has to pay a certain fee to enter the museum. Tickets for adults are available for 700 Yen while for high school students it is 400 Yen. One can also go for the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum pass. This card can be availed for 5000 Yen. This card allows one access to all the exhibitions in the art museum for one whole year, starting from the date of issue.
The museum has car-parking facility, though the parking space is small. It allows free parking for around 50 cars. The museum has a garden a restaurant and a hop also. One can reach this museum by taking a bus from the Nishi-Tokyo bus stop no.12 of the JR Hachioji Station. You can also travel by the Chuo Expressway from the Hachioji Interchange and come over here.
The Tokyo Fuji Art Museum with its numerous national and international exhibitions and fantastic art collection is a worth paying a visit when on a vacation to the city of Tokyo.
