University Art Museum
The University Art Museum in Tokyo, Japan is a museum housed in the Tokyo Fine Arts School or the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. The museum is known for its huge collection of Japanese art and artifacts.

The University Art Museum displays the numerous art and artifacts collected by the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. The university, which was established in 1887, initially housed its collection in its library called 'Bunko'. Thereafter, the collections were housed in the university library. In the year 1970, the collections of the Faculty of Music of this university were added to the art collection. It was also during this year when the art section was separated from the library and was established as the Art Museum. In the year 1999, the University Art Museum was opened to the public. The museum also serves as an inter-university research institute of the Fine Arts and Music departments of the university.

The entire museum consists of the main building, the Chinretsukan Gallery, Masaki Memorial Gallery and the Toride Annex. The main building has three separate sections meant for exhibitions, storage and research. One can also find a cafeteria, a museum shop and a painting material shop over here. The building occupies a space of 169997 square meters. The exhibition rooms are spacious and feature top light system and large glass cases for displaying the articles. The Chinretsukan Gallery is the main art gallery of the museum, and is primarily used for special exhibitions. This two-storied structure occupies a space of 429 square meters. The Masaki Memorial Gallery, dedicated to the fifth director of the university Masaki Naohiko, is a Japanese styled building, which displays Japanese paintings and artworks. The Toride Annex consists of a photo studio, a multi purpose hall and an administration office. The artworks over here are displayed on the walls of the annex.

The collection in the University Arts Museum is fantastic. The museum is said to have the largest art collection in the whole of Japan. It has around 28000 pieces dealing with Japanese modern art. The museum has 22 items, which have been listed as national treasures of the country. The articles displayed over here consists of Eastern Style Paintings, Western style paintings, prints, calligraphy, sculptures, metal works, lacquer works, ceramics, textiles, crafts work, wood blocks, replicas, rubber works, musical materials and artworks of the students and teachers of the university. The "Student Work" is the most important section of the museum. This section contains a wide collection of the original works of the students and artworks purchased by them during their graduation and post graduation. One can also check out the self-portraits of the oil painting courses over here.

A large number of events and exhibitions are regularly held in this museum. The museum also supports a number of educational programs and course for the students also. The museum is open on all days, except on Mondays. The visiting hours are from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Entry is not free. The entry fee is 100 Yen for school students and 250 Yen for adults. You can come to this museum by taking a train to the JR Ueno Station. From here, one has to come out of the Ueno park exit and then walk for 10 minutes before reaching this place.
